Competitive trail riding is different from the better known endurance racing.
Both cover a preset, measured course with veterinary checks and supervision,
but the courses for a CTR are shorter than for endurance rides.
Horse manners (training) and horsemanship are judged along the course.
Dressage movements, such as turn on the forehand, shoulder-in, etc. are judged as they are needed out on the trail.
A CTR must be completed within a window of time, but speed is not a judging factor.
Novice and CP rides are 30 to 40 miles long, averaging a fast walk, over a 2 day period.
Open rides are longer and require horses and riders who are more fit.
Novice and Open divisions are divided into classes determined by the rider's age and the combined weight of the rider and tack.
